My name is Christopher Karlson and I am a licensed architect and designer living in Boston, Massachusetts. As the recipient of the Rotch Travelling Scholarship in 2011, this site became the impetus for an interactive journal documenting my research and travels over the course of that year. Beyond that, I have adapted this format to continue exploring my architectural journey - both professionally and in admiration of others’ work - to highlight a simple truth. Good design matters.
With a Bachelor of Design degree from the University of Florida (2004) and a professional degree in architecture from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (2008), I have always seen architecture as a chance to challenge the images of stability and control that we conventionally infer upon our built structures and public spaces. My design intention is to maintain an open dialogue between varying degrees of private, public and civic life - creating varied network strategies and performances from the built environment that engage the user. It is the desire to develop a singular identity that will invigorate the intermingling of communal, contextual and cultural positions within the built environment and create a new form of 'publicness' - focusing on the holistic and empathetic experiences of all visitors.
Currently a Senior Associate / Senior Project Designer with Perkins & Will, I continue to pursue these ongoing relationships, while building on previous work experiences, which include Richard Meier & Partners Architects, Maryann Thompson Architects, and Anmahian Winton Architects.
Hope you enjoy the ramblings. All images throughout the site are my own unless stated otherwise. Please contact me with any queries.
